Day 937: Surfing Out The Back!

G’day,

In my ongoing quest to “hang ten” on Day 1000 today was a milestone…my first day surfing “out the back” with the big boys and girls!

Leaving The Shore!

In surf terms this means leaving the whitewash waves on the shore and heading further out for the green unbroken waves. In other words, taking off the training wheels and venturing out into the unknown!

I’d love to say my first time out the back was a raging success but it was not the case. My biggest issue in catching waves out there today was my lack of speed in turning the board in readiness to catch a wave. 

I Need More Core Strength

My instructor Camilla (from Currumbin Alley Surf School) said I have to sit further back on the board so I can pivot quicker! The only problem is that this is harder to control the board while waiting for a wave. 

She said I’ll have to work on my core and perhaps do some yoga as well. The funny thing is that I’ve been working on my core for the last 937 days!

Can I Make It Happen Next Week?

Now I know why I never tried to take up surfing 95.6 lbs ago on Day 1, it would have been impossible for me to even sit on the board, let alone paddle!

I have something to work on this week, let’s say if it makes a difference for next week’s surf lesson.
