G’day,
As I close in on my birthday (February 1st) there is one particular thing I wanted to do before I turned 50…surf standing up without my instructors giving me a push!
I Surfed Standing Up About 20 Times Today!
Lo and behold I actually stood up on the board around 20 times during today’s surf lesson with the Currumbin Alley Surf School! This was all under my own steam, meaning I caught the wave and rode it in with my instructor cheering me on from a distance.
I actually had one other surf lesson on Day 173 of Mission 2 (blog post below) where I surfed standing up multiple times, but I got a big “push” from my instructor each time. So, today was like a real surfing breakthrough for me!

Losing The Extra 10 kgs Was A Big Help!
While surfing is a fun sport it is something that I’ve had to really work hard on to even get to this surf stand up phase. When you do stand up and surf a wave into shore it is like 30 seconds of pure enjoyment and bliss!
One thing I have noticed is that the extra 10kg (22 lbs) I lost over the last two years has definitely helped me with balance while paddling. Another thing that has helped enormously is my increased pec strength as the surf “pop-up” essentially starts with a push-up.
Can I Surf Standing Up All By Myself?
I have another lesson planned for Australia Day on January 26 and then the following day I’ll take my own board out and see if I can surf standing up all by myself (a few days before my 50th birthday!).
